about

"the Iron Horse" is a steam train, of course, and the naive farmer who travels on it for the first time is supposed to be childishly amazed at this engineering miracle. Every farmer I've met, then and now, are in possession of all the modern technology, so don't be fooled by this song.
I think we should have "bitten the bullet" and cut a couple of verses so the bloody thing reaches the terminus a bit sooner; popular song though.
The tune is derivative and sounds like "The Piper O' Dundee", with another couple of tunes thrown in. The problem with tunes from "Ford's Vagabond Songs and Relics" is that they are sometimes the first versions, thus, case dismissed.
