Hamish brought this to the group and according to my "investigation" it comes from an American camping song called "The Cannibal King". The first two lines are:
"The cannibal king with the big nose ring
Fell in love with the dusty maid"
Hamish sung it at parties, without the verses, and we learned it by "oral tradition osmosis". I made that up, but you know what I mean. It's a nonsense song and served up as a light relief to incredulous audiences. "The Macs" was a pretty unconventional group, when I think about it. We seemed to spend the 60s and 70s laughing a lot.
If you think the words that we sing are strange, here are the last lines which we don't sing:
Rack 'em up, sack 'em up any ole time
Match in a gas tank - Boom! Boom!
