about

Lasswade, Midlothian, is my home. There was an existing light-hearted poem about a fictional lady, Jenny Lasswade, and how she gave her name to Lasswade village, ferrying gentlemen on her shoulders across the North Esk. It was a play on the word "lass" (young lady) and "wade" (as in wade across a river). On a whim, just before we were due to record, I made up words, mainly local place-names, and music to revisit the Jenny Lasswade story. We decided to record it just for fun, and I came to the studio and sang and played guitar at breakneck speed, which I could never attempt now. I used my old wooden metronome to keep a steady tempo and left the sound of the click on the track. The instrumental was also just for a laugh after the singing part of the track, and we did the whole thing in a couple of takes. It needs subtitles. I think the bass was added later.
