about

I like this track, which is from "Ord's Bothy Ballads", one of the classic sources of songs from the North-East "shoulder" of Scotland. The job description in this song wouldn't tempt me for an interview. At least the guy in the song tells the farm owner to stuff it, and I might say, he does it in a more eloquent way than I would have done. It's the old story, if job's are scarce you'll find "employers" who will exploit their position and status. Men and women trying to support their families with minimal wages had to put up with so much unnecessary hardship. Witness Mary Brookbanks', "The Jute Mill Song".
