about

In retrospect I think we probably didn't have enough Scottish material on the first half of this album. I've written about the excellent Cleethorpes (Grimsby) Folk Club and there are a couple of songs together, tracks 3 and 4, which were written by the residents of that club, "The Broadside".
John Connolly and Bill Meek wrote this one and I notice that Hamish plays celeste in the intro. He's a good piano player but we used his keyboard skills very rarely, but to some effect.
I'm not a fan of my singing on this one (sharpish) and we're a tad too clever with the harmony and timing arrangement but it's OK. I think the mix loses the tune of the chorus but Derek and I criss-crossed tune lines and it was an engineer's nightmare.
