This song has been covered a few times most notably by Drinkers Drouth, where a young Davy Steele did a great job on the verses. It was the title track of their album and I'm proud. I prefer their version to ours.....just.
I do like The Macs' version though, but it has a feeling that we're saying goodbye after years on the road and I suppose there was a feeling that we had just about run out of luck. It was good for us, musically, bearing in mind that the money wasn't so important. We considered the positives: we were recording this album in one of Europe's main studios: "The Olympic Studios" in Chelsea, we had clubs and concerts selling out, TV series, world tours etc and we couldn't imagine it all going on, but, after this album, it did.
There's a line in this song: "and we'll give a thought to a thousand friends and the few we came to know". This line is relevant to our lives and the lives of many musicians. You meet a lot of people on the road that you like but there are a few with whom you become lifelong friends. No emotion here, just the truth.
