about

I managed to find a very old book in an Edinburgh second-hand book shop: "Scottish Minstrel", the works of James Hogg. It's a huge book and I made a noble attempt at getting through it. That's where it all started.
In the folk scene we all knew about "Hogg's Jacobite Relics" and were aware of Hogg's prose and poetry but the complete works, well, that was a revelation.
Joe Stead from "Greenwich Village" Recordings embraced the idea of a "Hogg" album when I talked to him at his folk club in Greenwich and The Macs recorded the album over three days at Bill Leader's studio in Halifax. The LP record ("L.P.".....Google it, kids) had its good points; Hamish takes more of the singing and some of the arrangements are OK, but there are a couple of sad songs, both sung by me, which should have been allowed to escape.
It's a different type of album as we weren't exactly a concept band, but it turned out to be more popular than we expected.
Because of our history with Greentrax, Ian Green decided to buy the album from Greenwich" a few years ago so it's also available on their Apple Music and Spotify sites. Here's the Apple link:

You'll find the other 3 "cover designs" of the 4-cover LP in the first three track files.
I did all the idiosyncratic Bandcamp sleeve notes. Ian McCalman
